In an era where overtourism’s scars fuel a global shift toward regenerative travel—where destinations actively restore ecosystems, cultures, and communities—Hawaiʻi emerges as a pioneering beacon through the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority’s (HTA) 2024 Regenerative Experiences initiative redefining tourism as a healing force. The Hawaiʻi Tourism China orchestrated “Mālama with Pipi” vlog series, featuring Chinese influencer “Pipi is on Blue Planet” with over 1.4 million Xiaohongshu followers, showcases this vision by highlighting Pipi’s immersive engagements with local farmers and residents, and sharing candid conversations with Oʻahu farmers and Maui local residents about their lives and visitor impacts. Filmed in 2024 as part of HTA’s regenerative program and aligned with focusing on embedding mālama ʻāina (care for the land), the series educates China’s millennial and Gen Z travelers – craving wellness, sustainability, and cultural depth through authentic storytelling, hashtag challenges, and AR filters, driving 3M+ impressions and a 20% boost in eco-tour bookings, cementing Hawaiʻi as a global model for sustainable travel that transforms visitors into stewards of indigenous Kanaka Maoli culture and environmental restoration.
